Single father released after 10 days in prison for stealing bananas
Summary
A single father has been released from prison after serving 10 days following the Muar High Court commuting his sentence today.
Muhammad Fadil Ismail was caught on surveillance cameras stealing bananas from a farm on Jan 4, and he later pleaded guilty.
A single father sentenced to three months in prison for stealing bananas from a farm has been released after serving only 10 days behind bars.
This came after the Muar High Court commuted the lower court’s sentence on Muhammad Fadil Ismail today, a source said.
“The judge stated that since the accused has already served prison time from Jan 4, the court decided that a 10-day prison sentence is sufficient for the offence committed,” the source told Malaysiakini.
Following the ruling, the 35-year-old father of three, who was unrepresented in court, assured the judge that he would not repeat the offence.
On Jan 8, the Magistrate’s Court in Batu Pahat sentenced Fadil after he pleaded guilty to the theft charge.
The incident occurred on Jan 4, when the farm owner noticed increased thefts of his prized rastali bananas.
The 56-year-old owner had installed surveillance cameras on the property, which recorded Fadil cutting down a banana tree and stealing the fruit.
