The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s (Muda) flood relief efforts have suffered a setback after several of its volunteers tested positive for Covid-19.
Four volunteers who had worked at the party’s flood relief coordination headquarters or were present at the location were found to have contracted the virus.
“One volunteer tested positive when using a saliva test kit before entering the headquarters. The other three were directed by the secretariat to take a rapid antigen test at a clinic.
“For information, our daily standard operating procedure (SOP) requires all workers and volunteers to take a saliva test before entering the headquarters,” said Muda information chief Zaidel Baharuddin in a statement today.
The statement did not mention the location of the headquarters.
Previously, the party had raised RM1 million for flood victims in Pahang in four days, while its volunteers provided aid in the state particularly in Mentakab, Bentong, and Karak.
In light of the Covid-19 cases, it said all its headquarters' staff are undergoing PCR tests or professionally administered rapid antigen tests. The results of the PCR tests are expected tomorrow.
In the meantime, Zaidel said the party is contacting close contacts of the Covid-19 patients as a precautionary measure and pledged to cooperate with the authorities while following the Health Ministry’s Covid-19 SOP.
In a related development, the Health Ministry said there were 434 Covid-19 cases among 19,099 flood victims, including 14 in flood relief centres.
One Covid-19 cluster has also emerged involving a flood relief centre, but Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said no new cases in the cluster were found today and the situation is under control.
