I am appalled to read Kevin Tan's report that Umno politicians are seen to be supporting and treating candidates at the run-up to the student elections in Universiti Malaya ('Students allege mishandling of UM student elections', Nov 21).

While this goes to show the lengths Umno politicians in the Klang valley will go to, it also shows up Umno's double standards about partisan politics in our campuses today. Why are these 'Umno- candidates' and 'Umno-lecturers' not disciplined under the University and Universities Colleges Act or even arrested under the Internal Security Act?

Why is this type of activity not sanctioned? Are we saying that it is alright for our universities to be pro-Umno or pro-Barisan Nasional instead of being neutral to kinds of politics including party politics?

So many students in the Klang valley this year alone have been suspended, disciplined, expelled for being political just for voicing their concerns on ISA and the UUCA (Universities and University Colleges Act) - which is seen by this government as 'anti-government'.

Let us take Education Minister Musa Mohamad to task in Parliament. What kinds of students are being oppressed? Let us unravel the statistics of oppression of independence and autonomy.
