Equal weighting to all Gods laws
I agree with the letter 'Emphasise spiritual and moral aspects of religion' (Nov 15) by See All. I feel the writer's colleague may have the right idea. Muslims must give equal weighting to all of God's laws and not just concentrate on only several selected requirements of the faith. There is more to Islam than just refraining from pork and ham.
There are other requirements of Islam which are equally important but Muslims prefer to ignore. An example is the disallowing of 'interest'. Allah has forbidden the charging of interest because it is an instrument of oppression whereby the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Yet, 'interest' has become the basis of Malaysia and the world's banking and financial systems.
Another sore point of the Islamic world is the treatment of women. The Quran describes women as equal to men yet in many parts of the Islamic world women are denied the right to an education, the right to marry the spouse of their choice, the right to divorce an abusive husband, the right to travel, the right to vote, the right to drive cars, etc.
Finally, the most important requirement of Islam is ' jihad '. Muslims are compelled to take note of the sufferings of all Muslims everywhere in the world. If Muslims are being persecuted and oppressed anywhere in this world, Muslims enjoying freedom have an obligation to ' jihad '. Yet, despite knowing of the sufferings of the Palestinian people for more than 50 years, Muslims have still not liberated Palestine.
