'Suspend Najib immediately'

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must be suspended immediately to facilitate investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into his alleged involvement in buying over two assemblypersons in Perak.

PKR Youth Wing chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohammad Akin, speaking to newsmen at the MACC building this afternoon, said, "We strongly urge Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to utilise his executive powers to discharge Najib from all his formal duties so that the MACC will have conducive space in which to investigate Najib.
"He must also allow the MACC to conduct its investigations independently and without external interference," he added.
Yesterday, PKR Ipoh Barat division chief Fauzi Muda had made a statutory declaration alleging that Najib had offered him RM50 million to entice two PKR representatives to defect to BN to topple the Pakatan Rakyat government in Perak."
The plot thickened when Kedah executive councillor V Arumugam also alleged that he and his family members were threatened in a bid to pressure him to defect to BN.
Shamsul today said, "These revelations illuminate how audacious political threats are used to ensure Najib's political survival. Now, it seems that money politics and political threats have become mere tools used by Umno and BN to ensure they cling on to power.
"We view these developments as grave threats to the country because it involves our deputy prime minister, incoming Umno president and prime minister-in-waiting."
He added that PKR Youth had also lodged a report against Najib based on the statutory declaration and would be seeking an appointment with Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail next week to submit supportive documents for Fauzi's case.
"We have also requested the MACC to investigate (former deputy defence minister) Zainal Abidin Zin's role in this incident."
'Maybe Fauzi was afraid'
When pressed on why Fauzi waited a year before lodging a report, Shamsul replied, "I too was shocked when he revealed his encounter (with Najib). We (PKR leaders) also only knew of this after he made his statutory declaration.
"Perhaps (Fauzi) was scared. He was alone. Perhaps he was afraid that (the allegedly defecting assemblypersons) Jamaluddin Mat Radzi and Osman Jailu would feel wrongly accused.
"The current prime minister has vowed to continue reforms in anti-corruption efforts. If so, then these incidents shall provide test cases as to whether the newly-formed MACC will tackle corruption seriously or merely go after ‘small fish' like its predecessor, the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency)," he said.
