This letter is in reply to "Of the 'Great Satan' and good-for-nothing Muslim leaders" (Nov 7).

Why would it be in US interests to eradicate Islam? It's true there are a few rednecks in the South but the only threat Islam poses against the US is from people like Osama bin Laden, who I have no doubt is responsible (for the Sept 11 attacks).

Those who refer to the US as the "Great Satan" because it used nuclear weapons more than 50 years ago, truly cannot forgive people. They are holding the Americans of today responsible for the actions of some of their fathers. They were born damned, I suppose, because they were born American.

The real cause of the contempt towards the US among those in the Muslim world mainly stems from the fact that the US is a wealthy country with no recent wars, a thriving economy and a media imposing US culture upon the rest of the world. Whether such Muslims know it or not, they are unhappy that the more modern values and influences coming out of the US clash with Islam's, over a millennium years in age difference.

The US is also a scapegoat among poor Muslim peoples, such as those in Iraq. They need to blame the US why things aren't working for them. This cause actions and counter actions from both sides.

If Hitler had won World War II, you said there would be no Israel and the Muslim world would be united. I'd say all those in Asia would be starving under an oppressive Japanese empire; the Middle East would be under Hitler because of their British colonisers and Israel would not exist. Jews would not exist. Muslims would surely be next.

The US helped the Kosovo Albanians not because of any anti-Islamic agenda, but because of the pressure from its media which was highlighting the atrocities being committed by the Serbs there. Why would the US want to impose the sanctions it has on a Christian people in Serbia who are greater in number than the people of Kosovo. Are the Kosovo Muslims really set to lose their right to speak their own language and practice their own religion? The US wants to see Kosovo rejoin Yugoslavia so it has a bigger country to back it as such a small, poor country would have problems being on its own.

I do not support our current PM and his administration. But the fact that you hold a grievance because Malaysian Muslims have had to accept him despite only winning 30 percent of the vote sounds very arrogant. Malaysia is made up of Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and many other religions. If a majority of Muslims do not support him but enough of the rest do, then that's just tough for Muslims.

There are other people of different creeds who also happen to think that their religion is the truth, but I have tend to find that in this country at least, they are much less publicly arrogant about it. If Muslims should be ruled only by leaders who they have support for then perhaps there should be a strictly Muslim country for such xenophobic people. Perhaps we should all have a country for our own ethnic group.

But that would be unfortunate. Multiculturalism is a good thing. Without it, our country's tourism would be much lower and our lives less interesting. The only price of it is that all the people in a multicultural society must be willing to accept that their religious differences must not get in the way. If you cannot see things from someone else's point of view, even if you disagree with them, then you are as immature and egocentric as a small child.
