Former New Era College student Lim Ken Zhi today pleaded guilty to the charge of causing grievous hurt at the Kajang magistrate's court.
The drama studies graduate was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to New Era College senate chairperson Yap Sin Tian, who is also president of Chinese education group Dong Zong.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at the 10th convocation ceremony at the college, at 10.10am on Jan 11, 2009.
Lim could face a maximum seven-year jail term and a fine.
Sentencing on March 2
Magistrate Nurdiana Mohd Nazari later set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and impounded his passport. Lim posted bail and left without responding to queries from reporters.
She set March 2 to hear submissions on pleading and decide on sentencing.
Lim's counsel KK Wong and Alex Tan had earlier told the court that their client would like to apologise to the victim and his family.
It has been speculated that the punching incident was related to an ongoing tussle involving former New Era College principal Dr Kua Kia Soong.
However, Kua denied any involvement in the matter while the police also stated that there was no evidence to suggest that Lim had acted upon the instructions of any quarter.
