No excuse for the PMs comment

Wan Sou Hai may be right when he says Dr Mahathir Mohamad "was making a mere political statement to dramatise that this country would not...accept homosexuals as cabinet ministers", when the PM said Malaysia would toss out any gay foreign diplomat and his partner sent to our shores.
Whatever the intention behind the statement though, I see no reason excuse for Mahathir's comment by presuming it is just "political" or another Anwar bash.
A bigot and/or a leader willing to scapegoat a section of community for political gain would say the same thing Mahathir did.
What reason have we not to presume the prime minister is neither of these? Certainly not his own words.
