"The hantu (phamtom) does not know how to ride a bus. I said it before, there are no 'phantom' voters in this by-election," said EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.
Abdul Aziz said this today during a noon press conference, in reference to PKR Youth's allegations that six buses carrying 'phantom' voters had entered the Kuala Terengganu vicinity.
PAS officials have been expressing concern that the relatively low turnout rate at mid-day may pave way for 'phantom' voters to cast their ballots.
As of 2pm, the EC said that 56 percent of about 80,000 eligible voters had cast their ballots, but noted that the turnout from youths was extremely low.
No complaints thus far
On the polling day environment, Abdul Aziz - experiencing his fist election since taking over as the EC chief last December - said that feedback from the independent election observer group Malaysians Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) was largely satisfactory.
He added that thus far the EC has received no complaints, but noted that there were traffic jams in some areas.
Asked about the scuffle between party supporters at the SK Gong Kapas, Abdul Aziz said he did not receive any reports on the matter.
During the 12.15pm incident, Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat supporters initially teased each other but the exchange escalated into blows soon after, involving about 12 people.
According to election observers from domestic monitoring group the National Institute for Electoral Integrity (NIEI), police swiftly stepped in to stop the altercation but no arrests were witnessed.
The situation at the polling station was reportedly calm after the brief altercation.
