Er to fight Puspakom defamation suit

The president of the Pan Malaysian Lorry Owners Association (PMLOA) today submitted his statement of defence against the defamation suit filed by government-linked vehicle inspection body Puspakom.

The president of the Pan Malaysian Lorry Owners Association (PMLOA) today submitted his statement of defence against the defamation suit filed by government-linked vehicle inspection body Puspakom.
Puspakom had filed for a defamation suit on Oct 10 last year against the association’s president Er Sui See (pic, right) in relation to a letter published in The New Sunday Times dated June 1, 2008.
In the letter, Er made various allegations, which among others, accused Puspakom officers of corrupt practices.
Er also informed that he has been served an injunction by the court prohibiting him from speaking on the matter.
The defence’s case was filed at the Magistrate Court at Jalan Duta this evening by Er’s lawyer, Andrew Suresh (pic above, left).
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Andrew said that he expects Puspakom to respond and the court to set a date for hearing soon.
He further said his client intends to “vigorously defend against the said suit” and that eleven other associations have shown support for Er.
Several of Er’s supporters were also present at the court.
Er is not the first to accuse Puspakom of corruption. In the past, the body has been embroiled in various allegations of corruption that led to the arrest of some of its officers.
Puspakom’s top management, however, have always maintained that the body is honest in its intention to be corruption-free and have cooperated with the Anti Corruption Agency to curb such practices.
