After reading Chinese Malaysian's 'Islamic state is inevitable' (Sept 26), I am compelled enough to raise a few points. I do hope the views of the writer do not represent the views of Chinese population in the country.

Bearing in mind Indonesia with an 85 percent Muslim population hasn't gone theocratic since her founding, I don't see why Malaysia with just over half the population being Muslims, must form an Islamic state.

In a democracy, a corrupt government can be voted out, however difficult the process may be. In a theocracy, I don't see how that can happen, not when the will of the people is discounted in favour of the Almighty's which is interpreted through a particular belief. It's not a very comforting thought.

History has shown how leaders, especially religious ones, can manipulate religion to satisfy their own ends. And to go against them and the theocratic system - God forbid! They are the 'divinely appointed' guardians and executors of the faith.

I don't mind the rule of God; it is the fallible human representatives I fear.

As surely as Muslims would oppose the theocratic system of another religion imposed on them, I too am opposed to an Islamic state imposed on me.

As for the writer calling on DAP to "make the right decision" and "help build the inevitable Islamic nation", I must say I do not share his defeatist attitude vis a vis the setting up of an Islamic state.

I believe a corrupt government can be changed with the help of God without the need to resort to a theocracy which is not representative of the other half of the population.
