Finally, DAP has made a decision to quit the Barisan Alternatif at its own free will, and after lengthy debates, both within and outside the party. DAP will have to bear all responsibility for the consequences and ramifications of its decision.

In my opinion, with or without DAP in BA, PAS has to continue the process of moderation so that more and more non-Muslims would finally understand that Islam as represented by PAS is tolerant, modern and inclusive. PAS must continue to consult reputable non-DAP non-Muslim leaders behind the scenes before making any major decisions or pronouncements.

As for Keadilan, it is already a multiethnic party, although there are still more Malays. It should work harder to attract more capable Chinese, Indian, Iban and Kadazan leaders, members and supporters under its own banner.

As DAP has made the final decision to leave BA, Keadilan and for that matter, PRM, should now be free to accept Malaysians from whatever races, religions or past political backgrounds as members, leaders and supporters as long as the parties are satisfied that they can contribute to the new struggle.

As I understand it, many former DAP top leaders and thinkers have decided to join Keadilan and PRM to continue their struggle for democracy and human rights with the Malay/Muslim masses. It is only the correct move in view of the new reality where the struggle of democracy and human rights in Malaysia can no longer - and should not be - based on ethnic mobilisation, be it Malay nationalism, or Chinese chauvinism. We are all living in the 21st century, no more in the 1960s or 1970s.

While good Chinese and Indian democrats need the Malay/Muslim mass support, the poor and marginalised Malay/Muslim masses also need their leadership, knowledge and skills. It is a synergy that DAP fails to appreciate.

BA should produce more Chinese and Indian leaders so that it can no longer be branded as 'extremists'.

To my Chinese and Indian friends, I say: Please trust the Malay/Muslim masses; they are your friends, not enemies. They may not look and sound as smart, opulent, modern or advanced as BN's leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad, but they are trustworthy. They need your help now as you might need theirs one day.

To my Malay/Muslim brothers and sisters, I say: Trust that there are still many good Chinese and Indians outside DAP who are willing to share our struggle for freedom and democracy.
