Contrary to allegations that she has not acted on their problems, Rawang state assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei has denied accusations that she has ignored the plight of residents in flood-prone Taman Garing in Rawang, Selangor.

gan pei neeIn a letter to Malaysiakini today, she clarified that she has been doing everything in her power to get the relevant authorities to solve the long-standing problem.

"I have taken and will continue to practise proactive engagement with all relevant parties in solving the issue," Gan said in her letter.

Among the steps taken, said Gan, was to request for the department of irrigation and drainage to contract a consultant "to study the issue comprehensively" and to suggest a solution.

She added that all the parties involved had a meeting earlier this month to discuss the problems facing Taman Garing residents and did not object to the suggestions and are looking forward to solving the to issue.

Poor planning the root of the problem

"I have no intention to push aside my responsibility now nor am I saying the problem can't be solved because it was caused before my election (during the March 8 polls).

Taman Garing’s ad hoc flood committee co-ordinator Pramila Krishnamurthy had alleged that despite election promises and a change of government, there has been little improvement to the situation in her area.

She said a downpour last Saturday had led to knee-high inundation of some homes and damage to vehicles and other property.

The cause of the flood - the eighth in the last five years - is believed to be a combination of Taman Garing’s topographical features and a poorly-built and poorly-maintained water retention pond.

Pramila said despite having lodged complaints with the authorities over the issue since 2003, there has been little improvement.
