PKR Youth passed a resolution today that described the teaching of science and mathematics in English as "a betrayal of the position of Bahasa Melayu as the national language".

Steps should also be taken to improve the quality of learning English overall, said the wing.

Blaming the University and University Colleges Act for shackling the academic freedom of students in Malaysia, the wing also called for institutions of higher learning and their students to be given greater independence through the introduction of an University and University Colleges Independence Act.

The wing also criticised the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) for allegedly violating the right of university students to access quality education, and called for a funding system that combined scholarships with interest-free loans.

The government should also appoint prominent educational figures to put in place an educational system that would widen educational opportunities for all, said PKR Youth.

Minimum wage

Selangor PKR Youth in its resolution attacked Umno-BN's 'free market' principles that it said provided no protection to the people from the adverse impact of globalisation.

Because of this, said the wing, the Selangor government should implement a minimum wage standard for its civil servants while encouraging the private sector do so by putting in place a minimum wage policy for the industrial and investments sector.
