Violence, violence and more violence dominated the headlines of all major vernacular dailies.

English newspapers

All three major English dailies - New Straits Times, Star and Sun - led with the three-way contest for the Umno deputy presidency involving Muhyiddin Yassin, Mohd Ali Rustam and Muhammad Muhd Taib.

Malay newspapers

Utusan Malaysia headlined Umno women's wing deputy chief Sharizat Abdul Jalil's call on the wing's head, Rafidah Aziz, to bring forward the party's transition of power to March 2009.

The daily also featured a picture of family members and supporters carrying the coffin of Imam Samudra, who was executed by a firing squad yesterday over his role in the 2002 Bali bombings.

Meanwhile, Berita Harian announced Muhammad Muhd Taib's qualification in the race for the Umno deputy-presidency.

Berita Harian's front page also featured pictures of the fracas at the Seremban Umno division meeting yesterday.

Chinese newspapers

Two Chinese dailies - China Press and Oriental Daily News - headlined the Seremban Umno fracas. Both dailies featured pictures of a man in a blue cap being choked on their respective front pages.

The forceful dispersal by the police of the candle-light vigil in Petaling Jaya was also reported on the front page of China Press and Nanyang Siang Pau. The issue made headlines in Nanyang.

The candle-light vigil was meant to protest the use of the Internal Security Act and to commemorate the first anniversary of the Nov 10 Bersih rally last year.

Meanwhile, Sin Chew Daily headlined the three-cornered Umno deputy-presidency fight. The daily also highlighted a picture of four bloodied individuals who were allegedly assaulted by a large mob following a vehicle accident on its front page.

Editorial

New Straits Times' editorial focused on the execution of the three Bali bombers. It also expressed hope that Indonesians will continue to reject religious extremism.
