PM: Vijayaratnam was an amiable leader

The late Gerakan vice-president Dr S Vijayaratnam was an active and amiable Barisan Nasional leader, said Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today.

The premier, who is also BN chairperson, added that Vijayaratnam was respected by all sections of society.
Expressing shock and sadness over Vijayaratham's passing, Abdullah said the late politician had contributed a lot to the government and country when he was a senator and while holding the post of parliamentary secretary of the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry.
"My wife Jeanne and I extend our deepest condolences to the late Dr Vijayaratnam's wife, T Anucia and family for the loss of their loved one.
"I wish also to offer my condolences to Gerakan for the loss of an experienced leader who had done a lot of good deeds for the party," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Vijayaratnam, 58, was found dead in front of his clinic at the Vijaya Mahal building in Jalan Tunku Hassan in Seremban yesterday.
The father of four is believed to have fallen from the third floor of the premises.
Police have classified the case as sudden death.
Foul play, suicide ruled out
Yesterday, Negeri Sembilan police chief Osman Salleh said Vijayaratnam had come to his clinic as usual and collected the keys to go to the upper floors.
"A clinic assistant said his employer told him somebody wanted to rent one of the floors and he walked up after taking the keys," he told reporters at the scene.
Soon afterwards, there was commotion in the clinic when passers-by found Vijayaratnam's badly injured body in front of the clinic, he said.
"At this point, preliminary investigation rules out any involvement of a third party or element of suicide. We have classified the case as sudden death," he said.
Osman acknowledged that there were people who saw what happened and the police would question these witnesses.
When asked about rumours that Vijayaratnam had jumped from the building, Osman said police did not find any note on the body or at the scene.
