English newspapers

New Straits Times and Star headlined Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's uncontested win of the Umno presidency - his present total of 140 nominations rules out any other candidate meeting the minimum 58 required.


Malay newspapers

Both Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian also fronted Najib's victory, making the Pahang man the seventh president of the 62-year old party.


Tamil newspapers

Malaysia Nanban focused on the Sri Lankan conflict, between government forces and the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam - seeking independent rule for the Tamil region for the last 26 years.

Tamil Nesan also led with Najib's party victory - which lines him up for the premiership in March.

Makkal Osai led with Najib's assuring the Indian community of rtheir welfare, while speaking at the national level Deeepavali celebrations yesterday.

Chinese newspapers

Sin Chew Daily, Oriental Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau all headlined the decision taken at the Chinese education umbrella body Dong Zong's EGM not to retain the present dean of New Era College Kua Kia Soong for another year.

China Press frontpaged the warning issued by the Health Ministry that smoking in air-conditioned restaurants can result in a RM5,000 fine for both the restaurant owner as well as the smoker.
