The AFP report, '30,000 jobs on the line if banks farm out tasks' (Aug 25), stating that 30,000 of Malaysia's 77,000 bank workers may become redundant under a proposal by some banks to contract out part of their backroom operations, confirms my many warnings on the dangers of globalisation posted to various Malaysian discussion lists as well as malaysiakini.

Despite all his rhetoric against the dangers of globalisation, our prime minister and the Malaysian government have in practice played ball with the World Trade Organisation to open up Malaysia's borders to the influx of banks from the imperialist nations. The decision to consolidate the Malaysian banking sector into 10 core banks has potentially resulted in this proposed retrenchment of 39 percent of bank staff.

My heart goes out to those anti-globalisation protestors from Seattle to Genoa who demonstrated their hatred for globalisation, and especially to Carlo Giuliani who fell in battle, the 800 who were injured and the 301 who were arrested.

Never forget that globalisation is imperialism in a modern disguise.
