Minor commotion at MCA meet

A small commotion occurred at the ongoing MCA annual general meeting today when a elderly woman disrupted the event.

Toh Ah Mei, 67, from Kuantan entered the Lee San Choon hall at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur at about 12.45pm and shouted at party veteran Yap Pian Hon.

Yap was seated at the front row near the stage at the time but he never came into contact with Toh, who was restrained by ushers and quickly whisked out of the hall.

According to eye-witnesses, Yap remained calm throughout the commotion.

After Toh was removed from the hall, she starting shouting again.

"Ask Yap Pian Hon to come out. How can such a man be allowed to join MCA?" she shouted.

Following this, security guards and police personnel approached Toh and took her to a police van outside the hall.

On her way out of the building, Toh briefly spoke to reporters and said that she had confronted Yap over a 20-year-old issue involving a starfruit farm in Serdang.

After speaking to police in the van, Toh was released at about 1.40pm.

When approached by Malaysiakini, Yap said he does not rule out the possibility that his political rivals had staged the incident. However, he said he was in the dark over Toh's motives.

Yap, a former Serdang MP, confirmed that Toh was indeed a farmer in Serdang during his tenure as a state exco member.

"20 years ago, I helped seek government compensation for a group of starfruit farmers who used a piece of land illegally.

"This woman's land was legal, but she wanted to be compensated anyway. Obviously, she didn't get any (compensation)," he said.

Yap stressed that he had never offended the woman and that she had once caused a similar commotion at former MCA deputy president Lim Ah Lek’s Buntong election operations room.
