Kit Siang stands by 'meddling AG' claim

Opposition stalwart Lim Kit Siang has stood by his claim that attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail had abused his power to fabricate evidence in Anwar Ibrahim’s trials 10 years ago.

He was responding to a statement by de facto law minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz who said what has been alleged by Lim in Parliament yesterday was not true.
“What is pertinent is Nazri’s admission that he had not contacted the solicitor-general (Idrus Harun). Unless there is a stronger rebuttal, I stand by what I said in Parliament,” Lim read out a statement to reporters at the parliament lobby this afternoon.
“What is of public interest is why the authorities are taking so long to complete investigations into Anwar’s report against the attorney-general and the outcome,” added the Ipoh Timor MP.
He called on other ministers to emulate Nazri by providing a prompt response to other issues and scandals that he had raised in his speech yesterday.
‘High-level investigation led by Idrus’
Lim has claimed in the Dewan Rakyat during his debate on the Budget 2009 yesterday that a high-level investigation has ‘confirmed’ Abdul Gani had abused his power 10 years ago.
Quoting unnamed sources, Lim told the House he understands that Idrus had carried out an investigation into the claims in July after a police report was lodged by Anwar.
“I have come to know the solicitor-general has concluded that the AG had indeed abused his power to fabricate evidence against the Permatang Pauh MP (Anwar) and I am asking him to resign immediately now,” Lim had said yesterday.
“How can we allow a criminal (to serve) as AG? What is happening to Malaysia?”
However, the claim was denied by Nazri yesterday evening, who said that the investigation on the matter was still underway by the Anti-Corruption Agency.
The allegation that Abdul Gani and inspector-general of police Musa Hassan had fabricated evidence in Anwar’s trials 10 years ago resurfaced last week in a retired cop’s court documents.
Mat Zain Ibrahim, who had led the probe in the infamous ‘black eye incident’ involving Anwar in 1998, implied in the documents that Abdul Gani had delayed the investigation process and concealed important facts in the case from then AG, the late Mohtar Abdullah.
Abdul Gani was a senior deputy public prosecutor at the time.
Anwar had made a similar claim against Abdul Gani and Musa in a police report in July, but the duo have denied the allegation.
The police chief has since filed a defamation suit against Anwar while Abdul Gani has threatened to do so as well.
