I refer to the Malaysiakini report Investigate Najib over text-messages.

Najib doesn't want to talk about the SMS issue because as he says, there is no evidence of any abuse of power ‘if you read the SMSes carefully’. Besides, the PM has already confirmed this and therefore the case is closed.

What a load of double-speak. Najib cannot give a coherent response to these allegations and therefore he brushes them aside. Well, at least he didn't use the oft repeated excuse that he was ‘misquoted’ by the media or the whole thing is politically motivated.

Najib has just created yet another new entry in the lexicon of excuses that politicians can draw on in time of need.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said: "I cannot believe Najib will want to abuse power". Either the PM is terribly naive (or conveniently appearing to be so) or he wasn’t thinking when he said that.

Our PM also said something to the effect that how can Najib be guilty of abuse of power "when I have chosen him to succeed me". That statement is totally illogical and smacks of arrogance.

Effectively it means this - PM appoints DPM as his successor and therefore the DPM can do no wrong which means the DPM cannot possibly be involved in an abuse of power. This is a totally senseless statement.

We should also bear in mind that we are not just talking about abuse of power here. For a man who swore twice on the Koran that he is not involved in the Altantunya case and that he has never even met Altantunya, Najib is certainly showing an inordinately high level of interest and involvement in the criminal proceedings against Razak Baginda. Please ask Najib to explain why.

I am also perturbed by the deafening silence from the Bar Council on this issue. Whilst the Bar Council president is usually very vocal on matters concerning improprieties or alleged improprieties involving members of the profession (eg, the Lingam videotape and New Zealand holiday scandal), why have we not heard from her on this matter?

I would have thought that she would have hauled up Muhammad Shafee and demanded an explanation or clarification from him on this SMS issue. It seems to me that Shafee’s client was more the DPM rather than Razak Baginda judging from the content and tone of the SMS exchange.

I certainly hope that this issue is not just going to simply fade away from the public conscience. I urge our wakil rakyat from both sides of the political divide to harp on this issue until we get to the bottom of it and the truth prevails.

Otherwise, how are we to accept Najib as the next PM of our country with so many unanswered questions and skeletons in his closet?
