I refer to Abu Soleh's letter 'What else is a matter of choice? (Aug 18). According to the writer, I should not question the forced wearing of the head scarf. If I do so, then it is tantamount to questioning all of God's laws.

I would like to clarify that I only meant that Muslims should have a choice when it comes to minor matters in religion. Minor aspects of Islam are covered by the hadith, which are the reported opinions attributed to the prophet Muhammad.

However, they can never have freedom of choice over the major aspects of religion. The most important aspects of a Muslim's life is determined by the Quran. We cannot question the Quran because it is the word of God.

The law requiring the wearing of the head scarf exists in the Hadith and not the Quran. Just like other laws in the Hadith such as requiring men to grow beard and the forbidding of men urinating in a standing position, these laws are trivial. What is important is the 'weight' of the law.

Muslims must spend more time concentrating on the vital aspects of Islam which are the liberating of Muslims from oppression, murder, illiteracy, poverty, war, crime and cruel leaders. How can Muslims be respected if they keep harping on petty issues?
