New Straits Times headlined the deputy prime minister who is also Umno deputy president, Najib Abdul Razak’s decision to offer himself for the number one post in party elections due in March 2009.

Candidates who declared their intention to contest for the post of Umno deputy president were also front-paged, along with Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s RM30 million defamation suit against Utusan Malaysia.

Star led with the two Umno leaders joining the fray for Umno deputy president post. They are party vice president Mohd Ali Rustam and information chief, Muhammad Muhammad Taib.

Malaysia Nanban and Makkal Osai also led with Najib’s announcement to contest for the Umno president's post.

Tamil Nesan led with Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, T Murugaiah’s statement that the Hindu Rights Action Force would be banned after Deepavali.

Berita Harian stated that it was now up to Umno divisions to nominate their choice of leaders.

Malaysia Nanban praised the prime minister, who is also Umno president, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s decision in not defending the post. It said the decision demonstrated the fact that Abdullah was not a power-crazy leader.
