I refer to Arbibi Ashoy's letter 'Half a million ringgit for each Renong staff' (Aug 13). It is amusing to see how some people have taken a very simplistic approach in analysing issues. I am not Dr Mahathir Mohamad's supporter but I do agree with some of the things that he does or say.

Renong's loan is huge. The survival of Renong is vital to the survival of a few banks, which in turn is vital to the survival of a few thousand bank employees. If the government allowed Renong to collapse, the chain reaction will be drastic. Employees in other companies dealing with Renong, not just Renong's employees, will suffer.

If we go about looking at things according to how the writer sees it, then we can say that the government has spent hundreds of millions of ringgit to build Sepang F1 Circuit just to allow 22 guys to have fun racing on it. And not even one of them is Malaysian.

Corporate bailouts are not necessarily bad. Sometimes it is necessary for national interest. And even western countries, including the US and Britain, have done it. Remember Chrysler, British Leyland, the Channel Tunnel and most recently, the Millennium Dome?
