I am an MCA youth delegate. I was present during the fight, bomb scare and sacking at the MCA Youth AGM yesterday. I would like to tell a little more about the story then subsequently give my opinion of the whole incident.

I am from the Segambut Division in Wilayah Persekutuan. My youth chairperson is Lim Boon Tiong who now is no longer supporting our Wilayah chairperson Yew Tiong Loke. Thus I have to speak out on my own regarding the issue.

Firstly, there is a total of some 1,500 youth delegates of which only 1,100-odd were present at the AGM. Some 400 of those present walked out after Youth chairperson Ong Tee Keat ordered the police to remove the stubborn delegates who were questioning the method by which voting was carried out with regard to the changing of the speaker who was thought to be biased.

At one point the speaker actually concluded the number of raised hand votes while counting was still being carried out. This cause an outcry and Ong ordered the police to remove the person who objected and to arrest anyone who questioned the speaker.

With about 600 members left in the hall, the speaker, chairperson and committee quickly adopted the various resolutions which included:

1) A vote of 'no confidence' against Wilayah Persekutuan chairperson Yew for not legalising the EGM held last month;

2) To legalise the EGM held by Ong; and

3) Vote of 'no confidence' against another two or three central committee members (this reduced the number of youth central committee members, thereby providing less opposition towards Ong, especially from the Youth central committee which did not give him a majority earlier to legalise the EGM).

With the large number of the delegates walking out and another large number not present, the AGM concluded with all resolutions approved. Without a 50 percent majority of total delegates, can this AGM be accepted, approved and concluded? Is this the beginnings of a new party being formed by Ong and gang?

This remains to be seen; as we have observed in MCA, conclusions that are clearly contradictory to the party constitution can be overridden by the Youth chairperson.

Without the regard to the constitution, the delegates (with the guileless assistance of police following the orders of a deputy minister) were able to approve the EGM which was constitutionally illegal. One wonders why a fight had not broken out much earlier.

Is this the beginning of fistfights in AGMs, EGMs, Parliament, etc. as seen in countries like South Korea and Taiwan? Are gangsters starting to penetrate our political party (bodyguards of AGM speaker Lim Hong Sang)?

As a delegate I would insist on a secret ballot in all situations to be administered by a neutral party lest they decide to break my arm for raising it to vote.

In my humble opinion, this whole fracas was a face-saving exercise for chairperson Ong. To save his face, he was willing to sacrifice the party constitution, his secretary-general, his vice-chairperson and others in the central committee.

Regardless of whatever occurs, one should always be a gentleman and honour the constitution. Without it, we would all be in a state of chaos and lawlessness. Proof of this? Just look at yesterday's AGM.

Does Ong Tee Keat think that he is above the law to ignore the constitution and do just whatever he pleases? Does he think he can hoodwink the MCA members to believe him instead of the constitution?

As someone who is able to read the constitution for myself and rationalise its conclusions, I would like to appeal to like-minded people to evaluate the situation and take part in MCA to prevent lawlessness from becoming part of Malaysian politics.

Leaders should be people who can rationalise and understand the constitution instead of merely saying 'I am right because I have more people on my side and the others have walked out'.
