Teng Chang Khim's call to Lim Kit Siang to decline nomination for all leadership post is unwarranted and will probably start another minor crises in the DAP of which the party can do without ('Kit Siang asked to decline nomination at DAP congress', July 23).

Sure, Kit Siang has led the party for 32 years, but what has he done wrong? He has made astonishing sacrifices and made great contributions to the betterment of the country and is still doing so.

Instead of just mumbling about 'reforms', can Teng spell out what were those Kit Siang obstructed in 1991, 1996 and 2000? I thoroughly disagree that Kit Siang's continued influence will pose difficulties for the party. He is an experienced politician and his speedy and trenchant responses to issues is something I marvel at. Can Teng do any better?

Yet in the same breath, Teng admits that Kit Siang still has a role to play and that he will support Kit Siang as the opposition leader if Kit Siang is elected to Parliament! Yet, he asks Kit Siang to step aside (retire?). What is Teng trying to say?

Perhaps Teng can prove Kit Siang wrong by forming his own party and carrying out 'reforms' implemented by four former unhappy DAP members whose only job is to snipe at DAP and Kit Siang in their efforts to split the members. Otherwise, I'd suspect Teng has a hidden agenda and is just fishing in troubled waters.
