I refer to Malaysiakini report PKR supremo to be sworn in tomorrow.

History is in the making when the de facto leader of the opposition front is sworn in as the new MP for Permatang Pauh. Finally after a hiatus of nearly a decade, the prodigal son has returned to parliament to be a step closer to become the next premier of this country.

The win by a bigger majority by the former deputy premier can be considered a humiliating defeat for the BN government. With all the government machinery and money on the government’s side, the mighty BN had to swallow their pride as all the personal attacks against Anwar did not convince the local voters to vote for the BN candidate.

As Merdeka is around the corner, this is the best gift the local voters can give all Malaysians, a ray of hope that everything will be all right if and when the former heir apparent can clobber a deal with BN MPs to jump ship in order to form the next federal government.

Umno has to go back to its drawing board to find out why they lost badly in this by-election. What made the majority of the Malay voters abandon the party that fought for Malay rights for the past 50 years?

The present premier has to do a lot of soul-searching after this humiliating defeat. If his own state has rejected his candidate to become the next MP of Permatang Pauh, how can he morally hold on to his office even more so after receiving an earlier drubbing during the last polls?

His inept leadership and slow reform together with the bad publicity regarding his son-in-law’s reputation among the voters had caused public support for the PM to hit a new low. Even the recent fuel price decrease failed to convince the public to support the government.

Najib, who has gone all out to woo voters in the by-election, has a lot of credibility problems which can derail his ambition to succeed his boss two years down the road. His failure to reduce the majority of his nemesis - who is his main rival for the prime ministership - reflects badly on him as our future leader.

With all the scandals surrounding the present regime, the day of reckoning when BN sits on the ‘other side’ of parliament as the opposition seems to be getting nearer by the day. BN is in tatters now and no matter what the leaders do or say, the public will not support them anymore.

With Sept 16 closing in and Anwar in parliament, will this induce BN MPs to jump ship? It will be interesting to watch. The de facto leader of the opposition has the strength of character after all the trials and tribulations that he has gone through.

He is the only person who can take the wind out of BN’s sails in order to reform the government and make this country a better place for all Malaysians to have a brighter future.

The will of the people who want to change the present government to a better one cannot be stopped. Sooner or later BN will self-destruct as their grassroots supporters desert them for their failure to reform for the better.

Anwar, who used to sit on the government side during his time in government, will now sit on the other side of the aisle and mark his time to reclaim the top post of the government which has eluded him for the past ten years.

Let us pray hard that good BN MPs who have the nation’s interest at heart will follow their conscience and jump to a better ship in order to make our nation proud again. Malaysians deserve better.
