Yesterday's report entitled 'Umno Youth not interfering in varsities: Education Ministry', quoted Deputy Education Minister Senator Abdul Aziz Samsudin as saying that Umno Youth was right to blacklist university students who are said to be involved in anti-government activities.

His reasoning: Citing the example of the clampdown by the armed forces on students during the Tiananmen Square mass demonstration in 1989, he said, "If there was no firm rule then, there would be no China today."

I don't know how a deputy minister can justify the use of force against the thousands of students where about 200 died. Is he saying that the Chinese government was right to kill all those youths for the good of the country?

I'm sure that the whole world would disagree with him, judging by the criticism of China's human rights record in the wake of the country's recent Olympics bid. The deputy minister should be more sensitive to the families of the deceased when making such statements.
