As a strong supporter of Barisan Alternatif, I do not want the ongoing row between DAP and PAS over the issue of the Islamic state to escalate to the detriment of BA's solidarity in facing Barisan Nasional. In this regard I would like to offer some thoughts with the hope of clearing some air on the issue.

The row started over a statement made by Ustaz Hadi Abdul Awang of PAS, quoted by several newspapers last week and the authenticity of which I strongly doubt. It evoked a strong response from DAP's Karpal Singh.

But what was really said by Hadi? From what I gleaned, Hadi was inferring that should a new government be set up by BA after 2004, PAS will gradually introduce Islamic laws to the Muslims - i.e. replacing the present civil laws to Syariah laws governing the Muslims or even introduce Hudud to replace the present criminal laws that Muslims are subject to.

As for the non-Muslims, they can opt to be governed by the present criminal and civil laws. In other words the Islamic laws and the present laws will co-exist, just like under the current system which does not subject the non-Muslims to Syariah laws.

I think what Hadi had in mind is the introduction of Islamic laws governing the Muslims only and not the creation of an Islamic state per se. Thus Hadi's statement is consistent with the BA manifesto which is "...to create a favourable atmosphere through the provision of infrastructure, education and legislation towards affirmation of Islam as a way of life among Muslims, while ensuring the rights of non-Muslims to practice their respective religion or beliefs..."

So let common sense prevail among our BA leaders. I am appealing them to clear up this misunderstood issue quickly so as not to jeopardise our solidarity in facing our common enemy, the erstwhile BN.
