I disagree with Ranjit's letter, 'DAP championing vices or democracy?' (June 30).

I think it is really petty to label DAP as championing vices just because it opposes PAS' vision of an Islamic state.

I am a non-Muslim indian with a family and I neither gamble nor drink. Nor am I a member of DAP.

There are lots of Chinese among my friends and I don't see them gambling or drinking. As far as I can see they are working hard and providing for their families.

What non-Muslims are afraid of is that when PAS comes into power, it would turn Malaysia into something like the Gulf states or Iran or, even worse, Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

I totally support any government that wants to abolish gambling and drinking but at the same time I believe that everyone should have a choice on what they do rather than letting the government decide for them.

Incidentally, it is simplistic to assume that increasing religious training would reduce moral corruption. I believe that every one of us is responsible for the moral corruption present in our society and we should play an active role in combating it.

Although I'm not a supporter of DAP (in fact, I prefer the present government ) I have never come across any DAP statement (and there are lots of them on the Net) that they are lobbying for votes from gamblers and alcoholics.

On the other hand, every time a PAS leader speaks about forming the next government, all they ever talk about is closing down Genting, destroying statues, prohibiting alcohol consumption and so on. I think it would be better if they would list out their policies on freedom of religion, rights of the non-Malays and so forth if it were to form the next government.

Finally, I'm really disappointed with Keadilan as it seems to be like the lallang, giving out differing statements. I still believe Keadilan is just formed to lobby for Anwar Ibrahim's freedom rather than justice for all. (I'm sure malaysiakini does not agree with this as they are true-blue Anwaristas.)
