With reference to Andre Bastianpillai's letter, 'ISA and the misplaced idealism' (June 30), it is convenient to speak from afar, away and ever distant from the things you comment on.

Let us say that your daughter is being raped right in front of you or your house burns while you watch. Would you do something about it? Or you would just let "problems resolve by themselves in time" (to quote you).

We in Malaysia are doing what we can to stop the rape and plunder. Within sight and sound, we are in the thick of the action. Why let matters resolve when you can stop it now?

Coming from Sheffield, I can still hear the cars in Hanover Way and smell the summer in Snake Pass.

That was then, now I am here, in Malaysia, where it counts.
