Allow this Malay Muslim to express some unorthodox views about some PAS leaders, especially Trengganu Mentri Besar, Abdul Hadi Awang. To me, his assertion that PAS will establish an Islamic state once Barisan Alternatif comes into power, is as haprak (useless) as Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's speeches at the Umno annual general assembly last month.

PAS just does not and will not have a two-thirds majority or at least 129 seats in the Parliament (out of the total 193) to amend the Federal Constitution.

Firstly, it was only allocated some 60 seats to contest within the BA framework; secondly, even if it could win all the seats allocated to it, it still could not amend the Federal Constitution.

What if PAS withdrew from BA and contested all the 193 seats alone? Without BA, non-Muslims and also a large portion of Muslims would not vote for PAS because there would be no restraining powers. PAS would most likely perform worse than the 1999 general elections. It won only less than 30 seats.

Thus, to declare an objective which is impossible to achieve is nonsensical and utterly haprak .

But then, knowing these facts, why does DAP seem to 'enjoy' debating with PAS on an objective that can never be achieved? Is DAP already bankrupt of ideas?

My suggestion is simple: Stop debating haprak issues like 'Islamic state' or, for that matter, a 'Malaysian Malaysia'. Leave them to undergraduates overseas who need a topic to explore in their academic exams.

Let the adults in PAS and DAP work more diligently on the ground to champion the causes of the people through the articulation of more concrete and down-to-earth issues, like political parties controlling newspapers, judicial rot, inflation, crony bailouts, corruption, abuses of police power, unemployment, retrenchment, etc.
