If you really look at our political landscape, it is evident that there is nobody of the stature of Anwar Ibrahim to lead the country out of the quagmire it is in.

Everyone knows that - Umno, BN component members, Pakatan partners, you, me, everyone.

Also, as we see the events unfolding, it looks like Anwar is on a roll to take over the reins of government soon. Though not in one linear fashion, or in one fell swoop as most of us would want it, the happenings of late do point to a sooner or later takeover of power .

To anyone on the other side of Anwar, it is clear that Anwar has to go. He is just too credible all round. I am sure the thinking on the other side goes something like this - he goes or all of us have to go, and so long as we can help it, he goes first.

The current allegation and the way it has been done - someone who came on the scene three months ago - this Saiful character, the new villain in the story, rose to a close position to Anwar, was in close contact with Anwar, probably privy to much of Anwar's moves and thoughts.

He will surely now produce evidence, some of which will be factual about places he was in with Anwar alone, the time of such events, plus other details to give it authenticity.

All of this will be a well-orchestrated. There probably will also be some medical evidence (though I wonder how he will create that), and then his word that the incident did occur and that's about it, and they would have got Anwar.

They will brandish this evidence for all to see - and then say that one has to be objective about the whole thing and let the courts decide it.

Will those who have held power - almost forever - just give it up and go? They never do.

In fact, I have been thinking that there will be some kind of Machiavellian intrigue like this that will be staged to try and hang on to power.

The thing that has been reported to have happened, Saiful et al, reads like a Standard Operating Procedure for Machiavellian intrigues to kill all and any credible opposition.

It is a historical fact that the privileged who have exercised absolute power never give up power that they have enjoyed so abundantly for so long, just for the asking.

All history is full of it - in England, in Europe, in the Americas, in China, in the European Colonies and recently in Myanmar, in Zimbabwe, in Kenya and in former Soviet countries just to list a few of these instances.

In Malaysia, this is the way it is probably playing itself out.

The clouds are gathering for a major political storm. Get ready everyone - for now the possibilities have again expanded, just when we thought that democracy and justice was about to be reborn in our country.

What is going to happen next is difficult to predict specifically, but one thing is clear - that with this latest salvo on Anwar, the tone has been set for the things to come.
