I refer to the letter 'What's good about ISA' (June 7). The ISA was created to safeguard the country from the threat of communist.

But today, the threat is non-existent in our country. So to say that ISA is here to safeguard the country is not that accurate. It is actually being used to safeguard the position and interests of the well-connected. It is used to suppress the voices of those opposed to the blatant misuse of public money, abuse of power and corruption.

If the ISA had brought peace, why do houses still need gates, grills, burglar alarm, etc.?

Even back in September 1998 before Anwar Ibrahim was detained, the demonstration only happened in the capital city. The whole country in general was still at peace. The Commonwealth Games went on with hardly a bump.

I believe people in other states are wondering what is all the fuss is all about. There was no rioting, demonstration or looting in Perlis, Penang, Pahang or Johor, you name it. So to say that a peaceful gathering in Jalan Raja Laut can cause chaos throughout the country is totally over board.

The ISA did not bring about the peace that we are talking about today. Crimes are still taking place here and there. People are still getting murdered. We still worry about burglars ransacking our house or office each time we go for holiday. All this despite the ISA.

And if a peaceful gathering that occurs once in the blue moon disrupts our way of life and businesses, consider this: being stuck in traffic jam every day under the hot sun due to suspended monorail project, or because of flash floods each time there is heavy rain. Isn't that disruptive too?
