English newspapers

The New Straits Times led with Anwar Ibrahim leaving the Turkish ambassador's residence yesterday at around 6.45pm after receiving assurance from the home minister that his safety will be guaranteed. He took refuge there after he claimed his life may be in danger following fresh sodomy charges.

The Star also led with Anwar Ibrahim leaving the Turkish ambassador's residence. Anuar claimed that the sodomy allegation was a move to "quash his political career" as he was to announce this week a by-election in which he would be contesting.

Bahasa Malaysia newspapers

Both Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian headlined Anwar leaving the Turkish ambassador's residence yesterday. Anwar was said to have requested to seek refuge at the Turkish embassy.

Chinese newspapers

All major Chinese newspapers reported Anwar's departure from the Turkish ambassador's resident yesterday evening after being holed up there for some 36 hours.

Tamil newspapers

All Tamil dailies - Tamil Nesan, Malaysia Nanban and Makkal Osai - led with stories relating to sodomy accusation against Anwar and his departure from the Turkish embassy.

The New Straits Times commented on Ong Ka Ting's decision not to defend his post as MCA president. This move was not so much of a "bombshell" as many have expected this announcement.

Berita Harian commented on Anwar's move to seek refuge at the Turkish embassy. The paper said that the police should be left to conduct the investigation and that Anwar should not have sought refuge at a foreign embassy as this may trigger the involvement of foreign powers in national matters.

Utusan Malaysia also commented on the new sodomy charge that Anwar faced. The paper asked for Anwar supporters and other parties to allow the police to proceed with their investigation without interference with personal prejudices.

Sin Chew Daily said the government should end the monopoly of national utility company Tenaga Nasional in electricity supply so that the people can enjoy reasonable electricity tariff.

Nanyang Siang Pau said since Anwar faced sodomy accusations again, his party PKR now had a reason to postpone its Sept 16 deadline to seize power from BN.

China Press hoped the government can handle the issue of Anwar taking refuge in the Turkish embassy carefully, so that it will not affect the relationship between two countries.

Tamil Nesan called for a thorough investigation into a riot at a wedding over the weekend in which an off-duty policeman had fired shots, killing a person.

Makkal Osai commented on the 100-year celebrations of the St John's ambulance.
