A public rally to protest against the Internal Security Act and to press for freedom of those detained under the act is being held at the Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam tonight.

Attended by about 1,000 people, the rally started with a speech by Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) president Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.

Also present are several politicians including PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu, Hindraf national coordinator R Thanenthiran and former detainees Saari Sungib, Lee Ban Chen and Badrulamin Baharon.

The event is organised by GMI to commemorate the movement's past efforts in advocating the release of detainees under the draconian law, which allows detention without trial.

The people at the rally were presented with a multimedia presentation of GMI struggles, poetry reading and talks by for detainees to enable the public to receive first-hand information.

GMI also launched a special black and red T-shirt which will be worn on every Sunday until ISA is abolished.

Syed Ibrahim also asked the people to wear a black and red T-shirt on Sundays to show their support.

Wives of ISA detainees were present at the rally, wearing a red headscarf over a black dress.

Also present were some 50 members of Hindraf.
