In line with democratic convention, the Penang government will give official recognition to the position of the opposition leader in the state assembly.

The move is expected to be legalised through an amendment during the upcoming legislative sitting next month.

The opposition leader will then enjoy various privileges, allowances and other benefits within and outside the House.

lim guan eng and penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the executive council believes that such recognition would inspire “more mature and progressive political development” in Penang.

It would also enhance cooperation among all state assemblypersons in working for the people.

"We believe that the position of a state opposition leader is imperative to promote democracy and, an effective and decisive check and balance system in the state administration,” he said.

"An effective opposition front is as important as a dynamic and vibrant state government.”

The Penang government’s move mirrors that of its Perak counterpart, which has designated Penaga assemblyperson Azhar Ibrahim as opposition leader for the current legislative term.

When contacted, Azhar said he would prefer not to jump the gun as he has not received official confirmation of the state government's intention.

"It's unfair to comment now when I am yet to read anything official on this," he said.
