Another door will be closing for non-bumiputra students in their search for places in post-secondary learning institutions. I can't help but imagine the worst. The Umno-led Barisan Nasional government is on its way to create a single dominant race, economically and politically. I am not trying to incite racial tensions here. I am asking you to imagine the following scenario based on what was reported in The Straits Times article entitled "Quota system 'is for private colleges too'" (May 25)

After years of imposing quota on public institutions of higher learning, the BN government is now ready to tinker with the idea of imposing similar rules on private institutions. What will be the implications?

Faced with the restrictions, families, who liquidate whatever they have, will send their children overseas. Most of these children probably will not come back, since there's nothing great for them to look forward to in the increasingly racist nation.

These kids will eventually get whatever is left in the family wealth once their parents are gone. In the meantime, many families will also pack their bags to go to a better homeland, draining Malaysia from human resources and ever-valuable currency reserves. It's not the fault of these people that they have to leave. It's the government that makes it harder and harder for them to stay.

The majority of the non-bumiputras who are left behind will find that they have to scrap by with SPM diplomas since they're now hit with the private colleges quota. By then, the ratio may no longer be 55:45, since the percentage of the Malays can only go higher. No money, no university degrees, these non-bumiputras face a lifetime of low-end jobs, not because they can't do better, but because the government has shut down their path towards a better tomorrow.

There's also an extremely bright idea brewing somewhere in the Umno office in Johor Bahru. Last week, The Straits Times reported an Umno official in Johor complaining that the present ratio of male to female Malay students (40:60) should be changed, since many of these women either have to marry 'down' or have to marry foreigners. So much for creating Puteri Umno and a ministry handling women's affair.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the end result of these social engineering exercises is a poorer and dumber Malaysia, with women, Chinese and Indians at the bottom rung of the economic ladder. The kind of society with a 'superior' race that Hitler would have been proud of.
