Selangor to launch welfare plan for its citizens

In conjunction with its '100th day in power' celebration on June 20, the Pakatan-led Selangor government will aim to forge a ‘communitarian economy' to benefit the people in the state.
Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim's political secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (left) said the purpose of this communitarian economy was to lessen the people's burden, especially in the aftermath of the dramatic fuel price hike last week.
The communitarian economy, he said, would include setting up funds for people below the age of 18 and also funds to pool money generated from the state 's natural resources which will subsequently channeled to the people.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the celebration of the 100th day, Nik Nazmi also said that the state government will establish funds for "newborn babies to the elderly".
Nik Nazmi, also the state assemblyperson for Negeri Seri Setia, assured that the elderly would receive insurance funds set up especially for them.
He explained that babies, born from Jan 1, 2008, would also enjoy benefits once they have registered under the funds.
Also included in the welfare funds is the RM500,000 worth of rice which will be distributed to the people living below poverty level, as decided by state exco member Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
Nik Nazmi further pointed out that the funds should lay the foundation for “sharing wealth with the people” by taking care of the people’s welfare in Selangor.
Selangor DAP secretary Lau Weng San who was also present said the state government looks forward to having honest feedbacks from the people.
“This will help to strengthen our state leadership, particularly in facing all the unexpected obstacles,” he added.
Free water biggest achievement
Despite pressure from many parties, Nik Nazmi said the state government has managed to achieve something significant in its 100 days - which is to provide free 20 cubic metres of water to its consumers.
The announcement to provide free water was made by the menteri besar yesterday. It will commence on June 16.
“To provide free water worth RM100 million a year is ‘a one of its kind project’ to enable the people to enjoy state wealth,” Nik Nazmi said.
He said that the state government will also produce a report card on what the Pakatan-led government has been doing. This will be made public.
The 100th day celebration will start on June 18 and end on June 22.
The highlight of the event will be on June 20 at the Shah Alam Stadium where key Pakatan figures, Anwar Ibrahim, Khalid Ibrahim, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Abdul Hadi Awang and Lim Kit Siang will address the gathering.
