My husband and I wish to commend your reporter Susan Loone for writing a news analysis with justice at heart. We thank God that there are still journalists in Malaysia like Susan who dares to speak up for the truth ('Craftily crafting statue misquote', May 17). Give us an opportunity to make our testimony to all Malaysians and the world.

Indeed, the mainstream newspapers, including The Star have been trying hard to pit non-Muslims against Muslims by spreading untruthful propaganda against PAS. As Catholic Christians, we think it is wrong to do that. We pray all Christian journalists, Catholic or otherwise, uphold our belief in God and strive to do justice to all, including Muslims and PAS. Truth is truth, and it should apply also to Muslims in PAS.

First and foremost, both Christians and Muslims believe ultimately in the same One God, the God of Abraham. We also share the beliefs in heaven and hell, Creation and the Day of Judgment. Catechism of the Catholic Church has explicitly said that: "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day" (841: The Church's relationship with the Muslims).

Christians, especially Catholics should be closer to good Muslims than paganistic alcoholics, proponents of sexual licentiousness and glorifier of violence (like the WWF wrestling which resembles pagan Roman gladiators) of all races.

For people who believe in the God of Abraham and in Gospel of Jesus Christ, there is no place for xenophobia and racialism. The people who believe in the God of Abraham should not support and join racially-based parties and ideologies. Human beings are members of One family created by God, and there should not be any racial discrimination, either through state policy or prejudiced stereotype.

In this regard, we must remind Christians to be constantly aware of racialists, be them Malays in Umno or Chinese in MCA, Gerakan and DAP or Indians in MIC who try to make use of Christians to discredit PAS.

We are glad to hear and see that PAS, as a party for good Muslims too reject assabiyah (racism). We have seen with our own eyes the religious and racial tolerance and mutual respect in Kelantan and Terengganu under the wise and compassionate leadership of Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat and Hadi Awang who defend justice and care for the poor and downtrodden, irrespective of race and religion. Non-Islamic religions, including Catholicism are practised freely in these two states.

We must also remind MCA, Gerakan and DAP that alcoholism, gambling and sexual licentiousness are not only offensive to Islam and PAS, but also to at least Catholics. Both good Muslims and Catholics want our children to be brought up in God-loving environment. We are sure good Buddhists, too, share our commitment to building a society based on good values and morality, the lack of which have evidently destroyed the once mighty Roman Empire, and is destroying Umno.
