The Penang police quizzed DAP chairperson Karpal Singh for two hours today over alleged seditious remarks made regarding the Kelantan and Perak royalty.
The Penang police quizzed DAP chairperson Karpal Singh for two hours today over alleged seditious remarks made regarding the Kelantan and Perak royalty.
According to Bernama, Penang acting police chief Salleh Mat Rasid said the statements were recorded at Karpal’s office along Jalan Gree Hall, Penang.
"We will forward the investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers in a day or two," he said.
Salleh said that the police would only act on Karpal, who is being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act 1048, following instructions from the attorney-general.
He said investigations would be undertaken by the Kuala Lumpur police over similar remarks allegedly made by Karpal in Parliament.
Salleh revealed that the probe was based on two police reports, one made in Pasir Mas, Kelantan and another in Ipoh, Perak.
‘Not just a legal matter’
The Pasir Mas report dated April 25 was against Karpal’s criticism of a speech made by the Kelantan Regent Tengku Faris Petra.
The Ipoh report on May 5 relates to Karpal’s criticism of the Perak Sultan’s order for Perak Menteri Besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin to reinstate Perak Religious Department director Jamry Sury.
In a related development, Umno information chief Muhammad Muhd Taib said Karpal could have resolved his tiff with the Perak Sultan by meeting His Highness.
However, he failed to do so, lamented Muhammad during his opening speech at the Former Elected Representative Council (Mubarak) Selangor annual general meeting today.
“Even if Karpal is steadfast in his legal arguments, nevertheless he should take into consideration of the people’s feeling on the matter.
“He must understand that the matter doesn’t just involve the law but also religious matters that are under the sultan’s jurisdiction. We cannot interfere in such matters,” Muhammad was reported as saying.
