Parliament is in session and all the new set of 222 members of parliament or MPs have been sworn in. Soon the parliamentary debates will start.

Unfortunately, this new session started on a wrong footing when some of the new MPs failed to submit their written questions on that they wish to debate on. Strangely, even some of the veteran MPs had also failed to do the same.

To me, it doesn't matter; but what I want to know is whether the questions submitted are substantial, important and interesting instead of those questions for which answers could easily be found on the website of the respective ministries.

We want exact and specific questions to get exact answers. This is how to get members of the cabinet and government agencies to feel the heat if they are not able to come up with any intelligent answer.

It is not easy for any new MP or even the old ones to ask pertinent questions especially if they are not following what is happening in the country and not dealing with issues that they may not personally like.

The current sitting of parliament will show how the new MPs, from Pakatan Rakyat especially, will fare. If they fail, then I am afraid the voters won't like it and if they insist on running in the general election the next time, they can't expect to be supported.

No parliamentary sitting has been able to solve much; they have only managed to pass more laws and that's about it. In the end, it is the NGOs and other intellectuals and qualified persons in the country who are not MPs who have offered better advice and proposals.

Who amongst the MPs have taken the trouble to meet with the people? And how many of them take questions from the people that they can bring to Parliament?

I do hope all the MPs, regardless of whether they are in Barisan Nasional (BN) or Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will not gang up and be pitted against us - the public!

Let's hope that all of them will serve us - those who had voted them in - and be our 'servants' and not be too condescending and turn our Parliament into a circus that many say it is.

If it has to be a circus, then let it be a good one that can entertain us while helping to solve our common problems. And I do hope the new MPs have seen how that even if their parties failed to evict them from Parliament for non-performance, the people would do it as like what happened in the last elections.

My advice to all the MPs is to please come down to earth once in a while and meet us and ask us about what are the issues that are close to us.

I also do hope some of them would take issue with the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and heritage and Finas for having failed to develop the nation’s film industry.

It is an industry that has a lot of potential, but because the ministry and Finas officers are not qualified in the film industry, they have not been able to develop the local industry and have allowed it to be come a 'white elephant' over the years.
