Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail today said that the investigation into a police report against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for alleged abuse of power in 1998 was officially closed.

Abdul Gani said that the matter would not be considered to be re-opened for investigation unless fresh evidence surfaced.

"If a proper and complete investigation has been done, what else is there to investigate?" he said, adding that as long as the evidence remained as such, it was the end of the matter.

"Please let the matter rest. I don't see (the re-opening of investigation) unless something new comes up," Abdul Gani was reported as saying by Bernama.

On Tuesday, Abdul Gani revealed that the AG's Chambers found no case against Mahathir after its investigation showed there was no corroborative evidence against the former premier for alleged interference with the ACA's investigation on a senior government official.

The report was lodged by a police officer following a sworn statement by the then ACA director-general Shafee Yahya that Mahathir had ordered him to close a case.

Yesterday, federal CID director Mohd Bakri Zinin said police would check the content of the investigation papers to ascertain if the probe was conducted properly.
