It is tragic that Mahathir has chosen to deploy the Internal Security Act (ISA) to silence political adversaries. Such a cowardly act shames Malaysia in the eyes of the world: How do we explain to the world that we are still using 'colonial laws' to smother political dissent?

Political arrests have been used to break the rhythm of the opposition movement, especially to prevent Keadilan reformists from organising peaceful gatherings like Black 14, Kempen Selamatkan Wang Rakyat (campaign to save public monies) and even festive occasions.

Now the Mahathir regime has stooped so low that it can only think of the draconian ISA to prevent the increasing loss of Malay support. Lies and money politics have not worked to gain support. The opposition, on the hand, has made impressive strides compared with the government's financial blunders.

As for IGP Norian Mai's statement that Keadilan supporters are attempting to buy grenade launchers, molotov cocktails and ball bearings in attempts to topple the government, which fool would believe such a preposterous story? ([#1] Bombs and grenade launchers to topple gov't: IGP [/#], April 11) It's like saying a bunch of 'boy scouts and girl guides' can topple a well-oiled army and police force.

Shame on Mahathir for creating a police state. The ISA detentions are only acts of intimidation by Mahathir who is frightened of his own shadows.
