DAP picks Kok as S'gor deputy MB

DAP today recommended its Kinrara state assemblyperson Teresa Kok for the deputy menteri besar post in Selangor.

The party’s organising secretary Tan Kok Wai said that the party’s central committee agreed with Kok’s candidacy at a meeting held in Penang yesterday.
The Selangor DAP had submitted the names of Kok, DAP Selangor chief Ean Yong Hian Wah and three-term state assemblyperson Teng Chang Khim for the post.
The party’s decision making body however agreed that Kok, who is also the Seputeh member of Parliament, would be the most appropriate candidate for the post.
Tan said that the party agreed on Kok’s candidacy to promote women’s participation in politics.
Tan said that there were many women DAP candidates who won in the recent general election and Kok’s appointment as the deputy Selangor menteri besar would encourage even more women to be involved.
Tan also said that the party would be discussing with PKR on the formation of state exco in Selangor. It is learnt that DAP would be granted four exco slots - given to Kok, Ean Yong, Teng and Ronnie Lim.
Previously both Kok and Teng were seen in a tight fight for the deputy menteri besar’s post.
Many had felt that Teng would be a better choice given his experience in the state assembly. He was also the Selangor state legislative assembly opposition leader for two terms (1995-1999 and 2004-2008).
He has been the member of the Selangor state legislative assembly for three terms since 1995.
Kok, on the other hand, just made her debut into Selangor this time by winning the Kinrara state seat.
PKR’s secretary general and Ijok state assemblyperson Khalid Ibrahim was sworn in as the new menteri besar last Thursday. He has until this Saturday to name his exco members and his deputy.
