Incumbent Merbok member of parliament Zainuddin Maidin today dismissed claims that he has been rejected by the people in the constituency from contesting in the coming general election and thus his move to Sungai Petani.
Incumbent Merbok member of parliament Zainuddin Maidin today dismissed claims that he has been rejected by the people in the constituency from contesting in the coming general election and thus his move to Sungai Petani.
He explained that he would be contesting for the Sungai Petani seat as instructed by his party Umno.
He added that he was prepared to contest any where he was sent as he was committed to the party and was not afraid to face defeat.
“The person who made the claim (of me being rejected in Merbok) is none other than PKR adviser Anwar Ibrahim to belittle me and the Barisan Nasional,” he was quoted as saying in Bernama today.
“Anwar is jealous as he cannot contest in another constituency,” he said.
“He (Anwar) can only take the seat of his wife (Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) in Permatang Pauh, that also if she wins in this election,” he added.
Anwar has many faces
The information minister also said that unlike Anwar he was truly committed to Umno and to serve the people.
“I only have one face unlike Anwar who has many faces that confuses the people with his antics after being expelled from Umno,” he said.
Zainuddin said his only face was to serve the people and not as a singer, street protester or as a pious person.
Zainuddin will be facing PKR’s Johari Abdul in Sungai Petani on March 8. In 2004, the seat was won by BN through Mahadzir Mohd Khir who defeated PKR’s Zamri Yusof by 17,502 votes.
Sungai Petani is a Malay majority (59.8 percent) seat. Chinese make up of 29 percent while Indians constitute 10.8 percent. There are 76,284 voters in this seat.
In Zainuddin’s old seat of Merbok, BN’s Tajul Urus Md Zain face a straight fight with PKR’s Rashid Din. Zainuddin won this seat in 2004 with a 15,445-vote majority.
