Azmin revives Gombak BN candidate's 'past'

Speaking at a ceramah attended by a small crowd of residents in Taman Melawati last night, the PKR vice-president raised the matter of Anuar’s three year-suspension about a decade ago.
This was after he was found guilty of siphoning about RM35,000 meant for Umno Youth’s Gombak division.
Despite the lapse of time, Azmin said this is still a pertinent factor for voters to take into consideration when casting their ballots on March 8.
“Do you want this sort of person representing you for the Gombak parliamentary constituency? Do you want somebody immersed in corruption and money politics be your leader?” he asked.
His questions were met with a resounding “No!” by those present.
“If with RM30,000 his eyes are clouded over, he would be shortsighted if he were faced with RM300,000. With RM3 million, he would become blind!” he said further.
Anuar could not be reached despite repeated calls to his mobile phone.
‘Not money politics’
Speaking on his behalf, however, Umno Simpang Tiga (Gombak) branch leader Halim Idris said the suspension was over a financial “technical” matter which “did not involve money politics”.
Halim - who was the Gombak division information chief at the time - explained that infrastructure conglomerate YTL Corporation Bhd had donated RM35,000 towards a Selangor-wide football tournament organised by the Youth division.
Before the donation came through, Anuar had used his own money with the understanding he would be reimbursed. That was why the money, once obtained, was deposited into Anuar’s account.
“At that time, Anuar was vying for leadership of the division Youth. The matter came up, in fact, just three days before the election,” Halim said when contacted today.
“So it was actually just an internal squabble. It is true that he was suspended, but it was the doing of Anuar’s own colleagues who raised the issue because they were against him contesting the post of division Youth head. He was not suspended for money politics.”
Umno Youth Gombak chief Ismail Ahmad blasted PKR for casting aspersions on Anuar without presenting proof.
“Azmin is contesting against Anuar, so of course he will dig up all kind of dirt. If PKR has any proof, they should present it instead of spreading rumours. It’s karut (nonsense)and just a rumour,” he stressed.
In 2004, the Gombak seat went to Umno’s Dr Raman Ismail, who beat Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli by 13, 207 votes.
