The government should do something immediately to address the unwanted situation in Kampung Medan and the surrounding areas in Petaling Jaya. Everyone is waiting for the government to do something, everyone is looking everywhere to know what has happened lately, either out of curiosity or deep concern.
These clashes may be small and insignificant to people who have witnessed or heard of bigger and worst problems like those in Indonesia. However, although we are a nation that has lived in harmony since birth, even a small spark may lead to a big fire, not just due to physical violence, but rumours and malicious exaggerations.
The government has to act tactfully.
If the news about a drunken man being the spark for the whole fracas were true, then the government should study the ill-effects of alcoholism, following which, perhaps take action to curtail the activity and organise educational and publicity campaigns against it.
Organise special programmes that stress good values and tolerance. Let's be open and give constructive criticism on the negative values that led to this incident. Make sure that unity panels are made up of good scholars and thinkers who can dramatise ideas and make the programme interesting.
