Reject funds to ensure credibility

In your [#1]"Levelling the Field"[/#] (Feb 8) you reported that Malaysiakini.com received support from George Soros' Open Society. You have since in your Internet edition amended this report and claim that the Open Society funds the Bangkok-based Southeast Asian press Alliance, one source of funding for Malaysiakini.com.
This is political sophistry. We Malaysians know what Soros is up to. He is out to subvert all those countries which have done well and recovered economically despite him and what he has done through his financial manipulation of the world economy and markets. I agree with Information Ministry Zainuddin Maidin that malaysiakini should be kept out of government press conferences "not because they are critical of the government but because their credibility is in doubt".
Soros' Open Society Institute (OSI) was established in the early 1990s in New York City, ostensibly to transform closed societies into open ones. Our Asean neighbours should be careful as Malaysia is not the only target of Soros. Even pro-US Singapore is not immune. The OSI is funding the Open Singapore Centre and other pseudo-human rights groups.
In the rapid growth of various civic groups in the region, there are some dubious regional groups that have also mushroomed, bankrolled by the Americans through a web of proxies, Soros included, suggesting that altruism and the good of mankind are probably not the driving impulses.
Mickey Kantor's barely contained glee when he told the US Congress that the economic meltdown in Asia was an opportunity for 'democracy', i.e. American democracy, of the 'capitalist free-trade' kind, reveals the American economic national self-interest in all this democracy baloney.
Your paper can do a lot of good to separate the wheat from the chaff; only then can real human rights development take place - we don't need giving up indigenous dictators only to put in its place the hegemonic rule of neo-colonial masters.
Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, if they want Malaysiakini.com to be credible, should refuse to accept funding from the likes of Soros, whether the funding is direct or indirect.
