Arbibi's Ashoy religious justification that it is right for the Taliban to destroy the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan is akin to rationalising the destruction of the historical Babri mosque in India by Hindu hardliners ([#1]Taliban right to destroy statues[/#], March 6). The latter destroyed that place of worship on the grounds that it was once a temple and the birthplace of their God... and it nearly sparked a religious riot in India.

Let me clarify that I am not a Buddhist. While the statues are un-Islamic, it does not mean that they have no value to the world. They are a historical record for us and our future generations.

Also, even if they are looked upon as religious artifacts, I believe Islam preaches tolerance towards all religions and faiths.
